On April 16, a state of emergency was declared in Shiga.
I think many of you are worried about the situation, but I believe that, if we work hard together, we can overcome it.
That is why today I’d like to explain the 1/5 rule, which can help us change the way we act.
Why should we change? They say that if we can bring down contact with others by 80% (to 1/5), it will help reduce the spread of infection.
Here are a few things you could do:
- Go to your workplace only once a week and work from home on the other 4 days.
- Go shopping alone instead of going as a family.
- Only go shopping once a week.

Your actions can protect your life and the lives of those you love, and protect the rest of society.
Meanwhile, the prefectural government continues to work on measures to curb the spread of the virus, strengthen the health system and help the economy.
Finally, I urge you all to respect those working on the frontlines in the fight against the COVID-19 coronavirus: hospital staff, their families, as well as those who have been infected. Please do not discriminate against them.
I hope I can count on your cooperation.

MIKAZUKI Taizo, Governor of Shiga
